So finally, BSNL has also rolled out 3G in Chennai. The 3G data plans are superb, atleast compared to MTNL’s 3G plans in Delhi.
Monthly charges for both Prepaid and Postpaid customers, exclusive of tax-
| Plans | MBV 250 | MBV 400 | MBV 650 | MBV 1000 | MBV 3000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Charges (Rs) | 250 | 400 | 650 | 1000 | 3000 |
| Free Usage | 300 MB | 1 GB | 2 GB | 5 GB | Unlimited |
| Charges/Extra MB(Rs) | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | - |
.
The Unlimited plan for Rs. 3000 is a god send. For most users, even the Rs. 650 plan would easily suffice. Just hoping MTNL learns a thing or two about fair pricing from BSNL and that Airtel, Vodafone or Reliance jump into the 3G game soon. Hopefully, the 3G spectrum auctions will be done by March 31st and we will have affordable 3G soon.
You can check out more details of the BSNL 3G plans here – BSNL 3G Plans.
Note: It seems that the current 2G enabled SIMs won’t be compatible with 3G. You will have to buy a new SIM for Rs. 300. Whether you can shift your existing number to the 3G plan isn’t clear yet.
EDIT: BSNL has also started offering 3G in these cities – Agra, Dehradun, Jammu, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Lucknow, Shimla, Patna, Ranchi, Haldia, and Durgapur. And I thought Mumbai was supposed to be the technological hub of India.

Thinking 3g serice will improve the voice quality, I chnaged to BSNL 3G. But the voice quality continues to be so bad as earlier. The voice always breaks .
BSNL officers sya they are helpless.
BSNL does not want to improve the quality to encourage private palyers l;ike Airtell, Aircell etc.
If BSNL does not improve voice quality, all customers will swicth service provider as soon as the number portability comes in to force.

BSNL 3G works on and off. We get 3G signal only about 50% of time.
The line dropping and Voice disappearance is routinly happeneing and really BSNL does not bother.
I am having a vodaphone connection to maintain contact with all. After some time I have to discontinue BSNL connection.

BSNL claims to have 3G in Chennai and charges customers. In reality it is not there in all places. It works on and off. Voice quality is so poor anb you could never complete any conversation. The calls drop of the voice just disappears. No clue. Bsnl officers are do not have any clue and they do not take any step to improve it. Looks like bsnl officers at top want this organisation to be taken over by private players.
When ever it works, I am able to use it for internet browsing etc.

I agree. The state of BSNL 3G is pathetic.

Agreed. But with all the major players now in the game, BSNL will have to improve its service.
