The Hero Hawk Nu Age is one of the cheapest road bikes available in India. It’s one of the best options for beginners who want a road bike and don’t want to spend a fortune on their first one.
I am in no way a pro-cyclist so this review is only aimed at beginners who want to take a shot at cycling. It’s a superb bike which offers great VFM. In the 3 – 3.5k price range, it is one of the few options available along with the BSA Mach. I had read on a lot of cycling forums that the Hero Hawk was a much better option than the Mach, so decided to go with it.
I purchased the gearless version of the Hawk for 3.2k; will probably upgrade it with 5×2 Shimano gears soon. The bike is very sturdy with good build quality. I had the mudguards and carrier removed and will probably remove the aerobar too; didn’t find much use of it. Needless to say, it looks much better without all that.
Here’s a pic of my Hero Hawk Nu Age at one of my first attempts at amateur randonneuring at SGNP, Borivli.

Congratulations on your purchase of this lean, mean machine!
Where’s the customary me-on-the-bike photograph?
I insist getting the gears done sooner than ‘probably’ – it takes comfort to a whole new level.
P.s. I’d never ride a cycle in my city without a mud-guard, the horrors they may bring!

Thanks.
Will upload one soon.
Yea, planning to upgrade by next week.
Will attach the mudguards in the monsoon. Which bike do you have BTW?

A Passion Pro
I sold my bi-cycle about 3 years ago, with my last being a Top Gear Ezy 5×2 and a small Trailblazer before that.

Remove the Aero bar. It’s totally and utterly useless. And more so it adds tonnes of weight. Also, remove those bits and pieces of plastic near the wheels.
Harsh, totally untrue. I shifted my Hero Hawk from geared to single speed. I find it way better. And I am someone who rides long distances. I have done 265kms in a day and 750kms in a week on Hero Hawk Nu age after removing the gears. Those low end gears are totally PoS. It’s better to have a single speed, though it takes some time to adjust to it.

Well, it may be so for you but I always like to start on some free-ish pedaling and then work my way up to the top speeds. When am too tired, I switch it back down to let them relax a bit.
I have no idea about the kilometer rates you’re talking about – am no pro cyclist but gears are surely comfortable, hell yes. Of course the topmost gear is exactly the same as the unispeed – it was the lower ones that mattered for me
March 16th, 2010 at 2:29 pm
Harsh, fitting gears on non-geared cycle could end up in being more PITA than good.
March 17th, 2010 at 9:12 pm
That can be true, I would not know, alright
March 25th, 2010 at 12:18 pm
plese tell me what is the top most speed of the hawk nu age cycle with out gears tell me on my email id sangramsingh32@gmail.com
March 28th, 2010 at 4:10 pm
seems like its one of the cheapest in this genre
what would be its cost in CHennai(geared and nongeared)
March 28th, 2010 at 6:06 pm
The same.
Gearless – 3.2k
Geared – 3.6k.

Hi Guys… What is the frame size of Hero Hawk? is it 22 inch ?
January 27th, 2011 at 10:25 am
I got this bike almost 8 months ago from yeshwantpur, Bangalore for about 5k and absolutely love it.. but I was considering an upgrade to a firefox but now dropped the plan after I saw this review. I will be implementing an action plan as soon as i get home today.. remove mudguards, carrier and upgrade the brake pads. Guys also consider Fomas Road king deluxe.. This one has better rims for efficient braking. it may be about 1 or 1.5k more but worth it..

I too own the same bike. If I remove the aerobar as suggested, do I have to replace the complete handle. How much will the replacement handle cost me, and which model will suit it the most? I am looking for something comfortable.
Also am planning to put gears onto it, which brand and at what price should I get a good one made.
January 27th, 2011 at 11:04 pm
@Gans, nice blog. Do link me to a pic of your modded bike.
@Saikat, nope, you don’t need to remove the full handle, just the aerobar. You can get a set of basic Shimano gears for under 1k.

Thanks Pathik for that usefule piece of info.
I am planning to visit my local cycle store for the modifications and gears. I will also be interested if I can change the handle to a straight ones. Lets see.

hi pal, i live in kolkata and a bicycle enthusiast. i would like to know what can be the best racing bike i can buy within 4k price range. btw, i am a Lance Armstrong devotee.
February 17th, 2011 at 9:15 am
@Pathik .. I had to stick to my bike with all the options intact..
thought it will give me the weight loss factor but I’d leave the aero bars and mud guards. The aero bars proved to be great help when doing the down slopes. Max speed touched ~50kmph.

Hello BigB,
I took my H’Hawk a month back, am satisfied with the 3.2K spent.
The thing I want to know is the Hawk’s frame size in cms?
Thanks for the space
Have a good day…

i wish to buy a new bicycle for daily commuting to my workplace. i have seen BSA SLR. I have heard about Merida. but confused as to which one should i buy. can u give advice?
March 11th, 2011 at 2:23 pm
I was searching for something on internet. While googling, i saw ur site. initially i thought it to be any other website, but i am impressed to see the quality of ur webpage. the content is of good quality. Tell me whether Merida bicycles are worth the money? these are too expensive. but these are made of aluminium instead of iron.

I too owned a “Hero Hawk Nu Age”, had to sell it before it got all rusty. Stopped riding it as I found it very uncomfortable.
- You can’t peddle while taking a sharp turns coz the bicycle’s handle comes in-between. so this bike is not for riding through a crowded area or through a curvy road. And the first thing I did was to take the aero-handle off as that to was coming in between while standing and driving. This bike is not for standing and riding
- The breaking system sucks, its really hard to pull the breaks. And since the handle is curvey, the brake sticks on the handles easly gets loose and shaky
The pro’s are: Its cheap and suitable for sitting and riding through straight roads…
Maybe this was a bad choice on my part because my previous bike was a MTB with bull-handles and I was used to it….

I purchased this cycle today. Its good even though i found the brakes pretty bad.
August 27th, 2011 at 10:51 pm
I rode it on bumpy roads and damn this bike is no good for that. Its tires are way too slim and they further help in quick acceleration. I purchased it for 3.75k (ungeared version)

I bought this bicycle a few days back at 1k (used). I am thinking of changing the bottom brackets as they are worn out. So, do anyone know the size of the BB and shaft size so that I can purchase one before dismantling it.
I have also fitted a 48 teeth crankset and alond with the 16 teeth rear sprocket, the bike is a breeze to ride on a level road.
Also, I have removed the heavy handlebar and riding is far better now.
