Chrome OS was finally launched at the Google Chrome OS event yesterday.
As it is open source, there are two ways to try it out. You can download the whole source, compile / build an image and run it. For more instructions on how to do that, check out the official Chromium OS blog.
The easier way is to use Virtual Box or VMWare to run a already compiled Chrome image installed in a VMDK (Virtual Machine Disk).
First of all, you need to download
1. Virtual Box
2. Chrome OS VMDK
After downloading the Chrome OS VMDK using this torrent, extract the VMDK from the BZ2 archive using WinRAR.
To run Chrome OS,
1. Open Virtual Box and create a new Virtual Machine using the Wizard.
2. Name it Chrome and select the OS as Linux and version as Ubuntu. (This step doesn’t matter much you can select anything you want to.)
3. Set the RAM to 512 MB or 1 GB.
4. In the next window, instead of creating a new virtual hard disk, select Use Existing Hard Disk. Browse and add the extracted Chrome OS VMDK in the Virtual Media Manager.
5. Finish the Wizard and start the Virtual Machine you created. You should boot into Chrome OS.
