@Matty

The hardware you have selected seems good. 4 GB DDR3 RAM would suffice, I suppose, but 6 GB would be great. Even the ATi HD 5650 1 GB graphics card is quite good.

I would rather get a Core i7 - 720 1.6 GHz processor. The $150 difference between the 720 and 740 is not worth it.

This has been the most helpful page I have come across in the intense week I have put in reading and researching laptops, the language associated with, performance specifications, and so on. I am not computer literate, but never the less do not feel comfortable buying a product on a companies promise that it is a good machine. I appreciate the time and effort you have put in to better aid the public. With that being said, I have decided on an HP. Specifically the Envy 14 series. I'm thinking about customizing the machine with the Core i7-740 Quad Core Processor (1.73GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.93 GHz. The memory associated with is a little fuzzy to me. I have it configured with 6GB DDR3 (2 Dimm). Which configuration would be best, feel free to change the Processor or the memory or both as you see fit. I'm shooting in the dark here and am a full-time college student spending my hard earned summer money on this laptop that I will have for hopefully a very long time. Multimedia use will be frequent. Thank you for your time and knowledge... Matthew

Since lot of posts above are asking for a real world benchmark I thought I should share the following.

I have the previous generation and the current generation of MacBook Pros: i) 17" MBP C2D 3.06GHz | 8GB DDR3 | 500GB 7200; ii) 17" MBP i7 2.66GHz | 8GB DDR3 | 500GB 7200. Both laptops are identically equipped except for the CPU's. I do a lot of video editing using Apple Final Cut Pro 7 (Final Cut Studio 3), which is still a 32bit application running on 64bit OS X 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard) operating system.

When I compare rendering times for the exact same video file resulting in an approximately of 10 minutes long video on both CPUs the i7 2.66GHz MBP finishes the process approximately 28 seconds faster than the C2D 3.06Ghz MBP.
