This tutorial will explain how you can Root your Samsung Galaxy S (AT&T Captivate, T Mobile Vibrant).
Rooting your Samsung Galaxy S will give you full access to your phone.
How to root your Samsung Galaxy S
To root your Galaxy S, first download and install the Android SDK from Android SDK Download
The Android Debug Bridge (ADB) is an excellent tool which lets you manage your phone from your computer. It is included in the Android ASK installation alongwith USB drivers for your phone.
Download this file: update.zip and copy it to your SD card.
Connect your Samsung Galaxy S to your PC via USB and use the ADB console to type this command:
adb reboot recovery
In the recovery menu, select “apply sdcard:update.zip” by pressing Home + Volume_Down
Your Galaxy S will now reboot and is successfully rooted. You now have root access to your phone as a Super User.

Hi,
Could you explain me again “Connect your Samsung Galaxy S to your PC via USB and use the ADB console to type this command:
adb reboot recovery
In the recovery menu, select “apply sdcard:update.zip” by pressing Home + Volume_Down”
as i am unable to find ADB console or use it and i am also not able to go into recoverry menu, is it possible if you have a locked mobile phone it might wont work
November 28th, 2010 at 12:39 am
Hi, Pankaj,
You should download ADB, which is a part of Android SDK.
Its an executeable file.
Regards.

Hi Senthur – i have downloaded adb file as well and thankx for helping and it really works it helps me to root my SGi9000 but i am still unable to go to the volume down + home + switch on to the RECOVERY MODE.
As for the root i have opened the executable file and attached the mobile through USB and it directly went into recovery mode screen. All i have done this is only for upgrading FROYO 2.2 version as i have got 2.1 -update1 (firmware version) and ECLAIR.BOJG3 ?(build number).
I really need to update this froyo but i am still unable to do this. Could you have any other option how to upgrade it.
November 30th, 2010 at 8:37 pm
Hi Guys,
I’m trying to locate this ADB file in the Android SDK file, but when I click on it nothing happens. If must download this file separately please tell me where to download it from.
November 30th, 2010 at 9:00 pm
Hi – Extract the andorid SDK File you will find adb executable file in it.
\android-sdk_r07-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools\adb
November 30th, 2010 at 9:09 pm
Prakaj: first of all you should root your phone to get root access.
Then, there are 2 methods: 1. Use recovery mode 2. Use download mode to instal the all new froyo update..
3-button combo is advisable, as if the upgrade fails, atleast you can try to reset the phone.
Google for froyo roms
Roodboy: you should pass parameter to adb.exe..
Type this in command prompt: (After copying update.zip)
adb restart recovery
(Navigate to the exe location before executing this)

Hi Senthur – I have already rooted my SGS i9000 but for first method i cant go through recovery mode and second if i am trying to download through kies firmware i cant upgrade to froyo 2.2 as i am getting below error. First i thought may be because of locked mobile but now i have unlocked it second i thought its because of my mobile is not rooted but now as i have got both things still i cant upgrade to 2.2 i have rooted my mobile successfully.
I typed adb reboot recovery in command prompt and my mobile directly goes into recovery mode just showing four options.
1 reboot recovery
2 update.zip
3 ——–
4 ———–
But i cant go to the download screen
i am getting below errors while i go through keys through firware.
Firrmware Upgrade
Model Name: GT-i9000
Current Version: PDA:JG3 / PHONE JF1 / CSC:JG1
This device’s version cannot be updated.

Hi again.. See, entering download mode is as same as entering recovery mode..
By typing the below command, you can enter so called “download mode” and using a “rom” file “Odin”, you can install..
Note: it’s more risky to do this of your own.. If you have got warranty, warranty will be void by doing this. Also your device may go to unusable state (brick).
Be careful while doing all these stuffs, read lots of forums before you do something.
Try to enable 3-button combo. Using this, you don’t need a computer to enter download/recovery mode. Just volume up/down, center (home), power button to enter modes. Google galaxy s “3-button combo” for more details.

@Peter,
Wrong! I was able to root my Samsung Galaxy 2.2 with SuperOneClickv1.6.5-ShortFuse. Check the XDA Developers forum for it: http://forum.xda-developers.com
So yeah, they aren’t f**king time wasters.

Anyone who says their Samsung device cannot be rooted is full of shit. I have successfully rooted my device through every stock ROM update and leak (using GingerBreak, z4root, Odin, super one click, et al).
if you don’t succeed with one application, try another. and the reason you’re all getting an error, is because recovery 3(e) requires signature verification. DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Learn how to use your device, or go buy an iPhone.
September 30th, 2011 at 5:46 pm
@Al: re-install packages will install the update.zip file. come on, folks. why are you searching for this type of info/how-to, if you don’t know what you’re doing??? you guys are the f’ing time-wasters.

Okay, so I bought a Samsung Galaxy S, off of craigslist for $150 and the previous ownermet me in a mall parking lot. Its still on his service and I cant get aholdof him. Will rooting the phone take it off and allow me to put it on my service? And if not y’all seem alot smarter at this than me, how can I fix this. P.S. I dont need stupid answers like ” you shouldnt have bought it” or ” your stupid, you allways call about it and make sure its disconnected first” I’m not totaly retarded, I do realize where I went wrong…now I need to fix my issue. Please help. Thank you.

strongzz Hi there, just became alert to your blog through Google, and found that it is truly informative. I am gonna watch out for brussels. I will be grateful if you continue this in future. Many people will be benefited from your writing. Cheers!
November 22nd, 2011 at 10:53 am
Lol. You can root it you idiots. The power plus volume up and down at the same time makes it go into recovery reboot mode. Not the home key. Each phone model does it differently. Att is as I stated. Verizon, tmoblie and uk phones are different. Lol. Read your stupid owners manuel for your phone for your recovery program details.
November 22nd, 2011 at 10:58 am
Oh, and get a new sim card for the phone off craigs list. Your sim card will from your service will make the phone service change to your service, instead of his. Smiles…
November 22nd, 2011 at 11:04 am
Loretta, reset the entire phone. It is under the settings. Reset to manufacture settings..if it doesnt work. Take it to phone store and have them wipe it for you. Which is a hard reset.

Hello,
I have Samsung Galaxy S i897
I am not able to upgrade through Kies Mini as it says unregistered Device
I fond that the as Product ID it says is SGH-i897 (Captivate) which should be SGH-I897ZKAATT.
Now I found below mentioned article to restore the name
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880223
I didn’t find Proper, Stock, PIT, Modem, PDA etc files as I am new so not sure the one which I have should be used or not.
So I proceeded to next step, I got nv_data.bin but when I tried searching for Product ID in existing nv_data.bin, I was not able to do that.
So I would like to know how could I change the product ID?
If you have a known stock, PDA, PIT, Modem file that also would work.
As I am new.. I am scared if it will stop my phone, how I could recover.
Please help.
Thanks
